Heat Pump & Multi-Stage

Heat pumps require a thermostat with an O/B reversing valve wire and separate heat/cool staging. Most basic thermostats won't work. Ecobee SmartThermostat handles heat pumps with backup heat correctly.

For a simple single-stage gas furnace with a standard 4-wire thermostat, you probably can. But many Toronto homes have 2-stage furnaces, heat pumps, or zoned systems that need multi-wire connections. Incorrect wiring can short out the control board ($300–$800 repair). If you're unsure about your wiring, professional installation costs far less than a control board replacement.
For most GTA homes with 2-stage furnaces, we recommend the Ecobee SmartThermostat. It natively supports multi-stage, includes a remote room sensor, and handles heat pump O/B wiring correctly. Nest Learning Thermostat is excellent for simple single-stage systems. Honeywell T6 Pro is our go-to for reliability without WiFi dependency.
Most smart thermostats need a C-wire for continuous power. Many older GTA homes only have 4-wire thermostats. Solutions: running a new C-wire from the furnace (most reliable), using a C-wire adapter, or choosing a thermostat with a power-stealing circuit. We assess your wiring on the visit before recommending a solution.
Depends on your habits. If you're running your furnace at full comfort temperature 24/7, automatic setback during sleep and away periods can save 10–15% on heating. If you already manually adjust your thermostat, the savings will be smaller. The more consistently you use setback schedules, the more you'll save.
