Never Shovel Again · Toronto & GTA

Heated Driveways & Walkways for Toronto Winters

A radiant snow melting system heats from below — your driveway, front steps, and walkway stay clear automatically whenever it snows. No rock salt, no shoveling, no ice liability. Electric and hydronic systems for any size.

Electric vs. Hydronic Snow Melting

Both systems work well in Toronto winters. The right choice depends on your area size, whether you have an existing boiler, and your budget.

Electric Mat System

Pre-spaced resistance heating cables on a mesh mat embedded in the slab. Simpler to install, lower upfront cost. Best for areas up to ~400 sq ft — driveways, front steps, and walkways. Requires a 240V electrical feed and automatic snow sensor.

Hydronic (Boiler) System

Hot water from your boiler circulates through PEX tubing embedded in the slab. Higher upfront cost but significantly lower operating cost per sq ft. Best for driveways over 400–500 sq ft. Requires an existing boiler or installation of a new one.

Automatic Sensor Control

Both system types include a combination precipitation + temperature sensor. When the sensor detects moisture and temperatures below ~3°C, the system activates automatically. You never need to remember to turn it on — and it only runs when actually needed.

Electric vs. Hydronic: Side by Side

Snow Melting Questions

Heating cables (electric) or PEX tubing (hydronic) are embedded in the concrete or under pavers before the surface is finished. A combination sensor detects both temperature (below ~3°C) and moisture (precipitation). When conditions are right, the system activates automatically and keeps the surface above freezing as snow falls.
An electric mat system for a typical Toronto driveway (~500–800 sq ft) runs $5,000–$12,000 installed, including electrical panel work and sensor. A hydronic system for the same area runs $10,000–$22,000, including boiler connection and controls. Both assume new concrete — retrofitting adds the cost of removing and replacing the existing surface.
Concrete (poured), interlocking brick and pavers, natural stone, and asphalt. The system is installed before the surface is poured or laid. Retrofitting into an existing finished driveway requires removing the surface, installing the system, and reinstalling — more expensive but absolutely doable.
With a sensor-activated electric system on a 500 sq ft driveway in Toronto, operating costs typically run $150–$400/season in electricity, depending on winter severity. The system only runs during actual snowfall events, not continuously. Hydronic systems cost 40–60% less per square foot to operate once running.

Yes. We work alongside your concrete or paving contractor to install the heating cables or PEX tubing before the surface is poured. If you need a referral to a trusted GTA contractor, we can connect you with tradespeople we've worked with on previous projects in the area.
Yes, but it requires removing the existing surface first. We assess the existing driveway condition, quote the full project (surface removal, system installation, new pour), and coordinate the trades. It costs more than a new-pour installation, but many Toronto homeowners find the long-term convenience — and the elimination of snow removal costs — is well worth it.
